At the young age of 15, Nehemiah Elder from Tunuloa in Cakaudrove is making significant strides in the world of weightlifting, both in Fiji and on the international stage. With five international competitions to his credit, Elder’s journey includes notable events such as the 2023 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in India and the Oceania Championships held in various locations.
His performances have been nothing short of remarkable. Elder secured a silver medal in the senior category in India and broke records in Auckland, where he set new Oceania Youth records with lifts of 125kg in the snatch and 137kg in the clean and jerk, culminating in a total of 262kg. He not only excelled in the Youth category but also claimed titles as the Best Male Youth Lifter and earned gold medals in the junior and youth categories.
A catalyst for his success has been his father, Henry Elder, who also serves as the head coach of Weightlifting Fiji. Recognizing Nehemiah’s talent from a young age, Henry’s guidance and support have played a pivotal role in his son’s achievements. Nehemiah credits his success to consistent training, discipline, and his faith.
