At just 15 years old, Nehemiah Elder is establishing himself as a standout talent in the world of weightlifting, both locally in Fiji and on the international stage. Hailing from Tunuloa in Cakaudrove, Nehemiah has already participated in five international competitions, including the notable 2023 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in India and the upcoming 2024 Oceania Championship in Auckland.

Elder’s achievements are impressive for someone so young. He earned a silver medal in India in the senior category and made waves in Auckland by setting new Oceania Youth records in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total weight lifted. Notably, he cleared 125 kg in the snatch and 137 kg in the clean and jerk, leading him to secure multiple gold medals in both youth and junior categories, as well as the title of Best Male Youth Lifter.

His father, Henry Elder, who serves as the head coach for Weightlifting Fiji, has been a crucial influence in Nehemiah’s career. Recognizing his son’s talent from a young age, Henry introduced him to weightlifting early on, fostering a deep bond through sports. Nehemiah credits his father’s guidance and his unwavering faith in God as key factors in his success.

Despite his accolades, both Nehemiah and Henry emphasize the importance of humility and grounding, reminding each other that success can be fleeting. Training with his father has brought both excitement and pressure for Nehemiah, who speaks highly of their relationship. As they strategize for future competitions, they are also preparing for the possibility of Nehemiah competing independently.

Nehemiah draws inspiration from fellow weightlifters, citing his brothers Daniel Shaw and Jim and Taniela Rainibogi as motivators in his journey. He holds the memory of competing at the Commonwealth Championship in Fiji close to his heart, calling it his most significant achievement to date.

Looking ahead, Nehemiah aims to compete in the World Youth Championships in 2025, with aspirations to continue representing Fiji and elevating the status of weightlifting in his country. He is already regarded as one of the top ten weightlifters in the world youth category, and his dedication is poised to put Fiji on the map in the sport.

This young athlete’s journey is a testament to hard work, faith, and the power of supportive relationships, showcasing how dedication can lead to remarkable achievements at a young age. As he continues to break records and make strides in weightlifting, Nehemiah Elder not only embodies the spirit of competition but also serves as an inspiration for future generations of athletes.
