At just 11 years old, Diratilita Teresa is making significant strides in the world of athletics. From Karoko Village in Tunuloa, Cakaudrove, this young sprinter has captured attention after breaking a long-standing 30-year record in the Girls’ under-11 100 meters dash during the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games last year.

For Diratilita, this achievement is just the beginning of her athletic journey. Currently, she is participating in the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) Athletics Camp, a special holiday training program aimed at nurturing young talent. Taking advantage of her school break, Diratilita is focused on her ambition to become Fiji’s top runner.

“I attended this camp because I want to be the best athlete, the best runner,” she expressed, highlighting her commitment to improvement. Training has been beneficial for her, as she praises her coaches and mentions learning about pace, form, and overall enhancement of her skills.

Diratilita’s path in athletics began in her village, where she enjoyed friendly races against peers and family. Her natural talent was evident, prompting her school to encourage her to compete, and since then, she has flourished. Last year, she recorded a remarkable time of 13.31 seconds in the 100 meters, clinching a gold medal for Team Cakaudrove and setting a new record in the process.

The FSC Athletics Camp not only serves as a training ground but also provides Diratilita with the chance to connect with fellow young athletes who share her aspirations. This kind of initiative underscores the importance of supporting young talents in sports, offering them opportunities to learn and develop in a nurturing environment.

Diratilita’s story is an inspiring reminder of what dedication and passion can achieve. Her journey reflects the bright future of athletics in Fiji, as more young athletes emerge, ready to take on challenges and set new records.
