Medical Records Seized in Controversial Court Case: What’s Next for Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum?

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions issued a search warrant to Oceania Hospital PTE LTD to obtain the medical records of former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. DPP Senior Counsel Uniasi Ratukalou presented this information in court today.

Ratukalou explained that the warrant was issued to retrieve details of a CT scan, blood tests, and a summary of medical assistance provided to Sayed-Khaiyum after he had to leave the courtroom last Thursday for a medical examination due to severe chest pains. During last week’s session, Sayed-Khaiyum was visibly unwell and was assisted to the hospital by both an aide and his brother, Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

The search warrant was issued at 2 PM yesterday, but the DPP only received the requested documentation from Oceania at 4:15 PM. Ratukalou filed a supplementary affidavit as additional evidence.

Defense attorney Davenesh Sharma objected to the supplementary affidavit, stating that they had no prior knowledge of it and declined to comment. Both the State and the Defense are currently presenting their witnesses during the bail variation hearing for Sayed-Khaiyum.

Earlier this afternoon, Sayed-Khaiyum took the stand and was undergoing cross-examination by the DPP. The court’s variation hearing is ongoing, presided over by Resident Magistrate Sufia Hamza.
