For the first time, the media will be granted the opportunity to observe the destruction of a significant drug haul weighing 4.1 tonnes in Nadi. This announcement was made by John Rabuku, Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, in response to inquiries regarding the destruction plans.

Last Thursday, the High Court in Suva endorsed the state’s petition to eliminate this substantial quantity of drugs, which has been held in Police custody since the start of the year.

Rabuku noted that Police are currently finalizing the plan to carry out the destruction before it is submitted to the DPP’s office. He reassured that once the details are finalized, a formal invitation will be extended to all media organizations to attend this significant event.

He added that following the receipt of the destruction plan, the DPP’s office would have 14 days to inform the High Court before the actual destruction takes place. The plan will outline crucial information, including the timing and location of the destruction. Rabuku mentioned that once the plan is shared with the defense, they might be willing to disclose some of the details to the media.

This event represents a positive step in the fight against drug trafficking, emphasizing transparency in legal proceedings and reinforcing the commitment to tackling substance abuse in the community. It highlights the collaborative effort between law enforcement and the judiciary to uphold justice and deter illegal drug activities.

In summary, the media’s involvement in this drug destruction event underscores an important moment in the ongoing battle against drug crime, fostering a sense of accountability and community engagement in addressing such pressing issues.
