For the first time, the media will be permitted to observe the destruction of a substantial 4.1-tonne drug haul in Nadi. This announcement was made by John Rabuku, the Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, in response to inquiries regarding the destruction plan.

Last week, the High Court in Suva ruled in favor of the state’s request to dispose of the significant quantity of drugs, which has been held in police custody since the start of the year. Mr. Rabuku noted that the police are currently in the process of formulating the destruction plan, which will later be submitted to the DPP’s office for review.

He stated, “The media will be invited; once all details are finalized, invitations will be sent out to all media outlets to witness the destruction of the drugs.” After the plan is submitted, there is a 14-day window for the DPP to notify the High Court about the arrangement before the actual destruction takes place. Mr. Rabuku mentioned that the plan will include essential details such as the date, time, and location of the event.

This initiative represents a significant step towards transparency in how authorities handle drug-related cases, allowing the public to witness accountability in actions taken against narcotics. The invitation to the media not only signals the seriousness of the legal proceedings but also serves to reinforce a commitment to tackling drug crime in the community.

Overall, this development is a hopeful signal that law enforcement agencies are taking decisive action against drug trafficking, and by inviting the media, they are fostering community trust and accountability.
