In a significant development, the media will be granted access to witness the destruction of a substantial 4.1 tonne drug seizure in Nadi. Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, John Rabuku, confirmed this while providing updates on the destruction plan. The High Court in Suva recently authorized the state’s application to dispose of this large quantity of drugs, which has been held in Police custody since the start of the year.
Rabuku explained that the Police are currently in the process of finalizing the destruction plan, which will subsequently be submitted to the DPP’s office for further approval. He mentioned that the media would receive an invitation once all preparations are complete, allowing them to observe the destruction firsthand.
He added that once the plan is received, a notification is required to be sent to the High Court within 14 days prior to the actual destruction event. Details such as the time and location of the destruction will be included in the plan. There is an expectation that once the defense receives a copy, they may choose to inform the media about it as well.
This event not only marks a crucial step in the ongoing fight against illegal drugs but also highlights the transparency and accountability of the legal process in handling drug related issues.
In summary, the media’s involvement in this significant event underscores the commitment to transparency in the justice system, as well as the continuous efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region. This public spectacle is a hopeful reminder of steps being taken toward safety and justice in the community.
