For the first time, the media will have the opportunity to witness the destruction of a significant drug haul weighing 4.1 tonnes in Nadi. This announcement was made by John Rabuku, the Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, who provided updates on the drug destruction plan.
Recently, the High Court in Suva granted approval for the state’s application to destroy this substantial amount of narcotics, which has been held in police custody since the start of the year. Mr. Rabuku indicated that law enforcement is currently drafting a detailed plan for the destruction, which will be sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
“The media will definitely be invited. Once the plan is finalized, we will send out invitations to all media outlets to witness the destruction of the drugs,” Rabuku stated. He further explained that after the plan is received, there will be a 14-day window to inform the High Court before the actual destruction takes place. Key details such as the time and location of the event will be included in this plan.
This initiative marks a significant step towards transparency in the legal and law enforcement processes associated with drug-related crimes. It not only showcases the state’s commitment to tackling drug trafficking but also involves the community and the press in holding authorities accountable.
As the situation develops, it is hopeful that such actions will contribute to heightened public awareness and engagement in addressing drug-related issues in society.
