Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has criticized international media reports regarding the suspected alcohol poisoning incident at the Warrick Fiji Resort, describing them as “highly exaggerated.” He emphasized the need to counter false narratives to maintain Fiji’s reputation as a desirable travel destination.
The incident in question involved seven guests from the Coral Coast resort who exhibited symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and neurological distress. These guests were initially treated at Sigatoka Hospital before being transferred to Aspen Lautoka Hospital. Investigations revealed that all seven had consumed Pina Colada cocktails from the resort’s Suva Wing Bar. Notably, other guests who drank the same cocktails at different bars within the resort did not report any illness, raising questions about the accuracy of the media coverage.
In light of this, Prime Minister Rabuka called for efforts to clarify the situation and put an end to misinformation, reassuring potential travelers that Fiji remains a safe destination. He also expressed the need to identify the sources of negative press, suggesting they could be competitors in the tourism sector.
The Prime Minister described the incident as isolated and not a threat to Fiji’s tourism industry. He reiterated that visitors can feel secure while traveling to the islands. Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka stated that toxicology reports indicated no illicit substances or methanol were present in the liquor samples tied to the incident.
This reassurance from the government highlights their commitment to ensuring traveler safety and protecting Fiji’s tourism sector, which is vital for the nation’s economy.
In summary, while there was a concerning health incident involving a few guests at a resort, the government is working to dispel myths and foster confidence in Fiji as a safe travel destination. This incident ultimately serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate reporting and the resilience of the tourism industry in overcoming challenges.
