Tony Chan, a 24-year-old medical student, emphasizes the importance of support and encouragement from others in achieving success. At the 2024 University of Fiji Graduation ceremony held at the Saweni Campus in Lautoka, he was honored with five medals, including titles such as the UniFiji Outstanding Student in Internal Medicine, Outstanding Student in Paediatrics, and Outstanding Student in Community Health and Family Service. Additionally, Chan was one of just two students awarded the prestigious gold medal for the year, alongside the Vice-Chancellor Award.
Reflecting on his journey, Chan, a former student of Jai Narayan College in Suva, shared that the most significant challenge he faced was being separated from his family during the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed gratitude towards his family, fellow students, and educators, particularly Dr. Ifereimi Waqainabete, for their unwavering support. He attributed his success to the encouragement he received from his friends, calling them his pillars of strength throughout his six years of study.
Chan was pleasantly surprised to receive multiple awards and acknowledged the determination his educators recognized in him. He credited his parents as his primary mentors, stating that their guidance laid the foundation for his achievements. He also noted that the medals and certificates he earned have opened numerous opportunities for him in the medical field.
