The government has made a significant decision to extend the eviction deadline for residents of the Mead Road Public Rental Board (PRB) property, affording families additional time to secure suitable housing. Originally, the PRB planned for tenants to vacate the premises this month, citing safety concerns and intentions to demolish the aging blocks once they were empty.
As it stands, many families remain in the difficult position of searching for alternative accommodations. Housing Minister Maciu Nalumisa has revealed that among the 144 families affected, only approximately 30 have received assistance so far. The options for relocation have varied; some families have opted to move to rural villages, while others have been placed in different PRB properties. Several families have also sought help from the Housing Authority.
Minister Nalumisa expressed the government’s commitment to easing the burden on the roughly 100 tenants who have yet to find new homes. “We want to assist them because some of them do not know where to go. We are trying to identify more flats, and some have even requested to be moved to the villages,” he stated.
To facilitate these relocations, the government has allocated a budget of $200,000 to the PRB. Additionally, more funds have been requested from the Ministry of Finance to ensure comprehensive support for all families affected by this transition. This proactive approach reflects a compassionate recognition of the challenges faced by displaced families and underscores a commitment to providing them with viable housing solutions.
