Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has emphasized the importance of parents and guardians using the $200 government assistance specifically for their children’s back-to-school preparations. Speaking at the launch of the new Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS) online application system in Suva, Mr. Radrodro reiterated that this assistance is intended to support families as they prepare for the new academic year in 2025.

“This $200 is designed to assist parents and guardians in equipping their children for their educational journey ahead,” Mr. Radrodro stated, urging that the funds be allocated solely for school-related expenses.

Finance Minister Biman Prasad echoed these sentiments, highlighting the necessity for parents to manage the assistance wisely. He noted that these funds represent the government’s response to the increased financial strain families are experiencing due to rising living costs and the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Support for this initiative has a strong foundation; the government has historically provided significant assistance to students. Previous articles indicate that around 200,000 students have received similar support annually, costing approximately $130 million. The need for such support was especially pertinent following the holiday season, as families needed to purchase essential school supplies like uniforms, bags, and stationery.

This financial assistance not only aims to ease the economic burden on families but also contributes to the overall educational readiness of students. It reflects a broader commitment by the Coalition Government to invest in the future of education in the country, ensuring that families are equipped to provide their children with the necessary tools for academic success.

As the new school year approaches, this initiative represents a positive step forward, fostering an environment where students can return to school prepared and eager to learn. It speaks volumes about the government’s dedication to education, paving the way for a brighter future for all eligible students.
