The community of Maumi in Bau, Tailevu, can now rely on an enhanced safety measure during disasters, thanks to the inauguration of the Maumi Multipurpose Evacuation Centre. Officially launched by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, the center aims to bolster disaster preparedness in a village often affected by cyclones, floods, and other climate-related threats.

More than just a refuge, the facility will function as a secure haven during emergencies while also providing a communal space for regular meetings and various livelihood activities during peaceful times. Minister Ditoka emphasized the significance of this center, describing it as a manifestation of the government’s dedication to safeguarding rural communities.

“This is not just a building. It is an investment in safety, dignity, and resilience for the people of Maumi,” stated Ditoka.

The construction of the center was backed by funding from the Korea International Cooperation Agency and executed by IOM Fiji in collaboration with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and the National Disaster Risk Management Office.

Village Headman Jone Lacarua expressed gratitude towards the government and its partners, noting that the center brings much-needed peace of mind to the residents. He highlighted the center’s role in protecting vulnerable groups including children, women, the elderly, and people with disabilities during disasters.

The facility is set to benefit 42 households, amounting to approximately 156 residents. It will also act as a coordination point during emergency situations. To ensure its sustainable management, training has been provided to the community for ongoing oversight of the center.

Minister Ditoka encouraged villagers to take pride in their new center and utilize it responsibly, viewing it as a symbol of Maumi’s resilience and preparedness for future challenges. This initiative not only enhances safety but also fosters a sense of community strength and solidarity amid growing environmental uncertainties.
