The coaching methods of Flying Fijians assistant coach Aaron Mauger have had a significant positive impact on the players, according to head coach Mick Byrne, who spoke with SUNsports. Byrne highlighted Mauger’s exceptional rugby intelligence and the daily learning opportunities he provides during training sessions.
Mauger, a former All Blacks player with 46 Test caps and 89 Super Rugby appearances for the Crusaders, has previously been head coach of the Highlanders and Moana Pasifika. Byrne described Mauger’s approach as highly detailed and akin to that of a teacher, indicating that players are reaping the benefits of his on-field expertise.
As the Fiji Water-sponsored national rugby team prepares for a tough match against the USA in the Pacific Nations Cup semi-final, scheduled for tonight at 10:05 PM at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo, the players are focusing on physicality. Byrne acknowledged the USA’s solid coaching and their skillful, expansive playing style.
Byrne noted that the American team is organized, with a strong emphasis on using their forward pack effectively. He emphasized that Fiji must be cautious of their kicking game while ensuring their players deliver a physically dominant performance against the USA.
The return of players Meli Derenalagi, Kitione Salawa, and Elia Canakaivata has also been a positive factor in Fiji’s PNC campaign, and the team has been instructed to maintain possession and adhere to their game plan.
