The coaching approach of Flying Fijians assistant coach Aaron Mauger has significantly benefited the players, according to head coach Mick Byrne in an interview with SUNsports. Byrne praised Mauger’s profound rugby knowledge, stating that the players are gaining valuable insights during their daily training sessions.
Mauger, a former All Blacks second-five eighth, has an impressive playing resume that includes 46 Tests and 89 Super Rugby matches with the Crusaders. He has also held head coaching positions with the Highlanders and Moana Pasifika.
Byrne highlighted Mauger’s teaching-like coaching style, emphasizing its detailed nature and how it aids player development on the field. This expertise is particularly crucial as the Fiji Water-sponsored national rugby team prepares for a tough semi-final against the USA in the Pacific Nations Cup. The match is scheduled for tonight at 10:05 PM at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.
Byrne noted the USA is a well-coached team that plays an expansive style of rugby, emphasizing their physicality and effective kicking game controlled by their flyhalf. He described the USA as a structured team likely to utilize their forwards, and acknowledged the need for Fiji to counter their kicking game while maintaining a physical presence on the field.
The return of players Meli Derenalagi, Kitione Salawa, and Elia Canakaivata has been a boost for the team during the Pacific Nations Cup. Byrne urged his players to focus on retaining possession and sticking to their game plan.
