The coaching approach of Flying Fijians’ assistant coach Aaron Mauger has brought significant advantages to the players, according to head coach Mick Byrne. During an interview, Byrne expressed that Mauger’s depth of rugby knowledge is exceptional and that players are continuously learning through daily training sessions.
Mauger, a former All Blacks player with experience in 46 Tests and 89 Super Rugby matches for the Crusaders, has previously also coached the Highlanders and Moana Pasifika. Byrne noted that Mauger’s coaching resembles that of a teacher, emphasizing attention to detail in his instruction.
This coaching style is expected to be beneficial as the Fiji Water-sponsored national rugby team prepares for a physically demanding match against the USA in the Pacific Nations Cup semi-final tonight. The game will take place at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, starting at 10:05 PM.
Byrne acknowledged that the USA is a well-coached team that plays an expansive style of rugby, is physically strong in the front line, and possesses a strong kicking game led by their flyhalf. He emphasized that the Fijian team will need to be physically assertive and prepared for the USA’s structured style that often relies on their forward pack.
The return of players Meli Derenalagi, Kitione Salawa, and Elia Canakaivata has positively impacted the team’s performance during the tournament. Players have been reminded to maintain possession and adhere to the established game plan.
