The coaching approach of Aaron Mauger, assistant coach of the Flying Fijians, has been significantly beneficial for the players, according to head coach Mick Byrne. In a recent interview, Byrne praised Mauger’s exceptional rugby intelligence, noting that players gain valuable insights during their daily training sessions.

Mauger, a former All Blacks second-five eighth with experience from 46 Test matches and 89 Super Rugby games with the Crusaders, has previously served as head coach for both the Highlanders and Moana Pasifika. Byrne described Mauger’s teaching style as detailed and instructional, benefiting the players’ on-field development.

As the Fiji Water sponsored national rugby team prepares for a physical match against the USA in the Pacific Nations Cup semi-final tonight, which will be held at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo at 10:05 PM, Byrne highlighted the strength of the USA team. He emphasized their solid coaching and expansive playing style, noting their physical presence and effective kicking game.

Byrne expressed confidence in matching up against the USA, acknowledging their structured play that relies on a powerful forward pack. He also reiterated the importance of maintaining possession and adhering to their gameplan.

Meanwhile, the return of loose forwards Meli Derenalagi, Kitione Salawa, and Elia Canakaivata has been a strong point for the team throughout the tournament.
