The coaching approach of Flying Fijians assistant coach Aaron Mauger has significantly benefited the team. This insight was shared by head coach Mick Byrne during an interview with SUNsports.

Byrne highlighted Mauger’s exceptional rugby knowledge, stating, “The rugby IQ that Aaron brings into the squad is second to none, and players are gaining a lot from their daily training sessions.” Mauger, a former All Blacks player with 46 Test caps and 89 Super Rugby matches for the Crusaders, previously served as head coach for both the Highlanders and Moana Pasifika.

Byrne described Mauger’s coaching style as akin to that of a teacher, focusing heavily on detail. “The players are learning and benefiting from his expertise on the field,” he remarked.

This coaching strength is particularly important as the Fiji Water-sponsored national rugby team prepares for a tough match against the USA in the Pacific Nations Cup semi-final. The game is scheduled for tonight at 10:05 PM at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.

Byrne acknowledged that the USA team is well-coached and plays an expansive style of rugby. He noted their physical play and strong kicking game, emphasizing the need for Fiji to be prepared for a challenging contest. “We’re going to measure up against them and will be wary of their kicking game. Our players will need to be very physical against the USA,” he stated.

He also mentioned the impressive performances of players Meli Derenalagi, Kitione Salawa, and Elia Canakaivata during the Pacific Nations Cup campaign. Players have been instructed to focus on maintaining possession and adhering to their game plan.

The team lineup for the match is as follows:

1. Eroni Mawi, 2. Tevita Ikanivere (c), 3. Samuela Tawake, 4. Isoa Nasilasila, 5. Temo Mayanavanua, 6. Meli Derenalagi, 7. Kitione Salawa, 8. Elia Canakaivata, 9. Frank Lomani, 10. Caleb Muntz, 11. Epeli Momo, 12. Inia Tabuavou, 13. Iosefo Masi, 14. Vuate Karawalevu, 15. Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula.
