The coaching approach of Flying Fijians assistant coach Aaron Mauger has had a significant positive impact on the players, according to head coach Mick Byrne. In a recent interview, Byrne emphasized the exceptional rugby intelligence that Mauger brings to the team, which players are benefiting from as they learn daily during training sessions.

Mauger, a former All Blacks player with experience in 46 Tests and 89 Super Rugby matches for the Crusaders, has previously served as the head coach for the Highlanders and Moana Pasifika. Byrne noted that Mauger adopts a teaching style that is very detailed, allowing players to gain valuable insights during practice.

As the Fiji Water-sponsored national rugby team prepares for a tough match against the USA in the Pacific Nations Cup semi-final, set to take place at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, tonight, the players are focusing on applying the lessons they’ve learned. Byrne highlighted that the USA team is well-coached and excels in an expansive style of rugby, demonstrating physicality and strong kicking skills guided by their flyhalf.

Byrne warned that the structured nature of the USA team, particularly their use of the forward pack, would require Fiji to be ready for a physical contest. The Fijian players have been advised to maintain possession and adhere to their game plan. The return of players such as Meli Derenalagi, Kitione Salawa, and Elia Canakaivata has also been noted as an asset during the PNC campaign.

The team list for the upcoming match includes Eroni Mawi, Tevita Ikanivere (captain), Samuela Tawake, Isoa Nasilasila, Temo Mayanavanua, Meli Derenalagi, Kitione Salawa, Elia Canakaivata, Frank Lomani, Caleb Muntz, Epeli Momo, Inia Tabuavou, Iosefo Masi, Vuate Karawalevu, and Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula. The reserves are Mesulame Dolokoto, Haereiti Hetet, Peni Ravai, Leone Rotuisolia, Albert Tuisue, Peni Matawalu, Apisalome Vota, and Ilaisa Droasese.
