The coaching approach of Flying Fijians assistant coach Aaron Mauger has significantly benefitted the players, according to head coach Mick Byrne. In an interview with SUNsports, Byrne emphasized the high rugby intelligence that Mauger brings to the team, stating that players are gaining substantial knowledge from daily training sessions.
Mauger, a former All Blacks second five-eighth who has played 46 Tests and 89 Super Rugby matches for the Crusaders, has previously held head coaching roles with the Highlanders and Moana Pasifika. Byrne noted that Mauger’s teaching-style coaching is very detailed, allowing players to enhance their skills and understanding of the game.
This expertise is particularly crucial as the Fiji Water-sponsored national rugby team prepares for a challenging matchup against the United States in the Pacific Nations Cup semi-final tonight. The match will take place at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, at 10:05 PM.
Byrne acknowledged the USA team as well-coached and capable of playing a strong, expansive style of rugby. He highlighted the physicality of their forwards and the effectiveness of their flyhalf in managing the game. Byrne expressed confidence that the Flying Fijians would match up well against the USA and be mindful of their kicking strategies. He assured that the team is prepared to play physically against the USA.
Returning players Meli Derenalagi, Kitione Salawa, and Elia Canakaivata have shown impressive performance during the Pacific Nations Cup campaign, according to Byrne. He has instructed the team to maintain possession and adhere to their game plan.
