The coaching approach of Flying Fijians assistant coach Aaron Mauger has significantly benefited the players, according to head coach Mick Byrne. In an interview with SUNsports, Byrne expressed admiration for the rugby knowledge Mauger brings to the team. He noted that players are gaining valuable insights through daily training sessions.
Mauger, a former All Blacks second-five eighth with 46 Test appearances and 89 Super Rugby matches for the Crusaders, previously served as head coach for the Highlanders and Moana Pasifika. Byrne described Mauger’s coaching style as highly detailed, akin to that of a teacher, which is helping players develop their skills on the field.
As the Fiji Water-sponsored national rugby team prepares for a physically demanding match against the USA in the Pacific Nations Cup semi-final, scheduled for tonight at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo, Byrne emphasized the importance of Mauger’s expertise. He remarked on the strengths of the USA team, recognizing their effective game management and physicality.
Byrne noted that the USA squad is well-structured and likely to leverage their forward pack. He affirmed that the Flying Fijians are ready to counteract the USA’s kicking game while maintaining a physically robust approach.
The return of key players Meli Derenalagi, Kitione Salawa, and Elia Canakaivata has been a highlight for the team during this campaign, with Byrne urging players to focus on maintaining possession and adhering to the game plan.
