The Mataqali Matalevu in Ra has successfully acquired a 14-seater minibus as part of its strategic efforts to invest in commercial ventures. The ceremony marking the handover was officiated by Minister for Lands Filimoni Vosarogo, who presented the vehicle to the turaga ni mataqali Eremasi Ralulu.

During the event, Mr. Vosarogo highlighted that the mataqali received an impressive $746,000 in December 2023 as a renewed premium for an exploratory lease on their land, which is under consideration as the potential location for a new bottling company.

He mentioned that the initial lease premium saw a significant increase from $400,000 to $746,000 following successful negotiations. “There were some issues with the landowners regarding payments, and we’ve been able to successfully renegotiate the premium,” Mr. Vosarogo stated, adding that the funds handed over last year reflect the positive outcome of those discussions.

Encouraging the mataqali to make prudent financial decisions, Mr. Vosarogo advised, “Don’t take the money and spend it. You need to pour it into something that will generate income and revenue for your mataqali.” He expressed satisfaction that the mataqali had united in their decision to embark on this entrepreneurial venture by investing in the minibus.

This initiative not only symbolizes a step towards self-sufficiency for the Mataqali Matalevu but also reflects a growing trend among local communities to harness resources for sustainable development and income generation.

With the recent investment and potential commercial opportunities on the horizon, this development heralds a hopeful future for the Mataqali Matalevu, paving the way for financial growth and community empowerment.
