Matai Leuta, a former USA 7s player and Olympian, has achieved a dream by playing competitive rugby in Fiji at the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens tournament at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. This event marks a significant milestone in the 34-year-old’s career, as it is the first time he has played rugby competitively in his homeland, despite having spent most of his life in the United States.

Leuta, who was born in Marina, California, has familial connections to Salia, Nayau in Lau, Fiji. He lived in Fiji from ages six to sixteen before moving back to the U.S. While he faced challenges in returning to the country over the years, his love for Fiji remained strong, particularly through his connection to sevens rugby, which propelled him into the HSBC World Sevens Series during the 2014/2015 season.

Expressing his excitement about this opportunity, Leuta stated, “This is my first time playing in Fiji; it’s very special. My family will be coming down… But my roots, my love has always been here in Fiji.” His participation under what he describes as a unique opportunity offered by coach Mike Friday showcases his desire to reconnect with his cultural heritage and give back to the Fijian community.

Mike Friday’s Select 7s team features an impressive roster, including Olympic gold medalist Jerry Tuwai and South Africa’s Rosco Specman, promising a thrilling competition from January 16 to 18. Friday highlighted the invaluable experiences that come with playing rugby, emphasizing making memories and building friendships among players across the globe.

Though Leuta retired from professional sevens rugby in 2021, he viewed this return to the field as a special occasion, stating, “You cannot be Fijian and not play in this tournament.” He aims to inspire young Fijian players to follow in his footsteps, helping them realize their dreams of competing on an international stage.

The Coral Coast Sevens not only underscores Leuta’s remarkable journey but also serves as a vibrant platform for celebrating Fiji’s rich rugby culture, fostering a sense of community and togetherness among players and fans alike. With seasoned athletes like Leuta back in action, the tournament promises to be a memorable affair, filled with high-level competition and the spirit of rugby that binds the community together.
