Law enforcement is gearing up for a significant celebration in Washington, D.C., marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army on June 14. Matt McCool, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service, announced during a press briefing that there could be a turnout of hundreds of thousands of attendees.
To ensure safety, a large contingent of personnel from local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, including thousands of agents and officers, will be deployed throughout the event. Both the FBI and the Metropolitan Police Department have reported no credible threats at this time.
McCool remarked, “We’re preparing for an enormous turnout. That is why we are leaving no stone unturned.” Security measures will be extensive, featuring 18.5 miles of anti-scale fencing, 17 miles of concrete barriers, and the use of 175 magnetometers. Drones will also be deployed by the Secret Service to monitor the event.
The festivities will include an Army birthday festival on the National Mall, with a parade concluding the celebration. Additionally, the event coincides with President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday, who will preside over an enlistment and re-enlistment ceremony.
Significant traffic disruptions are expected in the vicinity of the National Mall, West Potomac Park, and The Ellipse, as Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department warned of road closures. The Army will bring 6,500 troops, 150 vehicles, and 50 aircraft for the event, featuring flyovers and fireworks. As a result, the FAA will temporarily halt arrivals and departures at Washington’s Reagan National Airport during peak times.
While there are currently no expected protests similar to those that occurred recently in Los Angeles, McCool shared that the Secret Service is monitoring potential demonstrations and is prepared to respond if needed. “That will be handled swiftly,” he stated, emphasizing law enforcement’s readiness to maintain order.
This monumental event symbolizes not only a significant milestone for the U.S. Army but also a commitment to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees. As preparations continue, there remains hope for a peaceful celebration that honors military service and community spirit.
