Mass Murderer Seeks Bail Amidst Controversy

Tevita Kapawale, an accused mass murderer, presented a bail application this morning before Judge Justice Dane Tuiqereqere. Kapawale is facing serious charges, including five counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of intimidation.

The allegations state that he killed five crew members onboard the FV Tiro 2 in Fiji waters on May 18, 2021, following a confrontation with the crew. The victims named in the charges include Benjamin Mattaputty, Eme Warma, Alfat Kodri, Samuela Sukera, and Qiritavabea Cagilabakomeli. In addition, Kapawale is charged with the attempted murder of Kaminieli Vucago and intimidation of Mitieli Cama.

During the hearing, Kapawale expressed that he is the primary provider for his family, emphasizing his responsibility to support his wife, children, and elderly parents. However, State lawyer Triveshni Sharma opposed the bail application vigorously, highlighting the severity of the charges and arguing that Kapawale’s father is still employed and capable of contributing to the family’s support.

In reply, Kapawale maintained that his father, being over 60, requires support. Sharma further argued that granting bail could set a precedent for other defendants facing similar serious charges. She reminded the court of Kapawale’s previous bail status, during which he failed to appear on two occasions, raising concerns about his reliability in attending court hearings.

Sharma pointed out that the case has significant public interest due to its serious nature and potential penalties, which include a mandatory life sentence. Justice Tuiqereqere is expected to deliver a decision regarding the bail application on the 15th of this month.
