Tevita Kapawale, who is facing severe charges including five counts of murder, an attempt of murder, and intimidation, was denied bail by the Suva High Court today. During the hearing led by Justice Dane Tuiqereqere, Kapawale was implicated in the deaths of three Indonesian nationals and two Fijians aboard the FV Tiro 2 on May 18, 2021, following a dispute among crew members.
This was Kapawale’s second bail request, in which he argued he needed to support his family financially. However, Justice Tuiqereqere noted that Kapawale had missed two court appearances. Although he turned himself in after authorities issued a bench warrant, the judge emphasized that this did not excuse his previous absences.
The judge expressed concern that if Kapawale were released on bail, he might not return for his trial, which is set for January. While acknowledging the principle of presumption of innocence, Justice Tuiqereqere highlighted the gravity of the charges against Kapawale and the compelling evidence available. He cautioned that a conviction for murder could result in a life sentence.
