Marshall Islands Takes Historic Step Towards a Nuclear-Free Future

Marshall Islands Makes Historic Move Towards a Nuclear-Free Future

Baron Waqa, Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), has lauded the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) for its historic signing of the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty, also known as the Treaty of Rarotonga, on March 3, 2025. This significant event coincided with Nuclear Victims Remembrance Day, showcasing the Marshall Islands’ commitment to nuclear disarmament and the vision for a safer, nuclear-free region.

By signing the Treaty of Rarotonga, the Marshall Islands has made a clear pledge to adhere to its principles ahead of formal ratification. This initiative is crucial in bolstering the Pacific region’s joint efforts towards nuclear non-proliferation, dovetailing with the overarching 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.

In his address, Waqa underscored the importance of this signing, stating, “This step demonstrates the nation’s unwavering commitment to nuclear disarmament.” He acknowledged the persistent challenges that the Marshall Islands faces, a nation that has experienced the aftermath of nuclear testing, and characterized the signing as a beacon of solidarity and advocacy among Forum nations for a secure, nuclear-weapon-free Pacific.

Waqa’s remarks are consistent with his previous observations made during the recent Nuclear Victims Remembrance Day commemorations, where he reflected on the lasting effects of nuclear testing in the region. He emphasized the resilience and shared history of the Marshallese people, highlighting their strength in overcoming hardships as a catalyst for unity and progress toward justice.

The Treaty of Rarotonga, initiated for signatures in 1985 and fully effective since 1986, is a cornerstone agreement that reinforces the commitment of the Pacific Islands towards nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. The signing of the treaty by the Republic of the Marshall Islands carries profound implications, given its historical legacy of nuclear testing and ongoing advocacy for nuclear justice.

The actions undertaken by the Marshall Islands exemplify both a moment of reflection on their past and a hopeful example for Pacific nations. This commitment not only reinforces optimism for a future characterized by peace but also encourages a collective responsibility towards nuclear disarmament and environmental protection, fostering regional collaboration and healing. The Marshall Islands’ dedication serves as a pivotal step towards achieving a safer and more unified Pacific Island community.
