Residents of Marou Village in Nadarivatu, Rakiraki, are experiencing enhanced safety and convenience in their daily travels, thanks to the newly completed foot-crossing. This significant infrastructure development has transformed the way the community traverses the river, alleviating long-standing challenges.
For years, residents faced disruptions caused by swollen river waters during periods of heavy rain, which led to children missing school, families delaying medical visits, and farmers being unable to access their gardens. The newly inaugurated Marou Village Foot-crossing now provides a reliable and safe route, regardless of weather conditions.
Constructed under the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management’s Community Access Roads, Footpaths and Footbridges (CARFF) Programme, this project was built at a cost of $48,000 and serves nearly 100 villagers. The foot-crossing is anticipated to greatly enhance safety and accessibility, with a particular focus on aiding women, children, the elderly, and persons living with disabilities.
This infrastructure not only strengthens the daily connectivity within the community but also bolsters resilience against environmental challenges, marking a positive step forward for the rural population of Marou Village. With this improvement, residents can look forward to a more secure future, free from the limitations that previously hindered their daily lives.
