Market Worries: Is Easy Money Leading Youth Astray?

A vendor who has been operating at the Labasa market for over 20 years expressed concern that young adults working there may be tempted to engage in illegal activities, as the market appears to be a hotspot for drug dealers. Losena Veilivi noted a noticeable increase in the presence of these dealers in the area.

“We do not want any dealing or selling of drugs to occur in the market,” Ms. Veilivi stated. She emphasized that the safety of children in the vicinity is paramount and expressed fears that they might get involved in such activities.

Reports indicate that many young men have been observed loitering in the market and are suspected of selling drugs, with some having a history of drug-related offenses. Ms. Veilivi pointed out that the allure of easy money through drug dealing has become tempting for young people facing financial pressures to support their families.

“Some have just started young families and feel the stress to provide,” she remarked, underscoring the urgency to enhance security measures to maintain the market as a safe environment free from illegal activities.

In response to the rising concerns, town special administrator Samuela Ligairi stated that the market should not be a venue for drug transactions and assured that actions would be taken to confront any dealers found operating within the market premises.
