Labasa Market has gained notoriety as a hub for drug sales, according to Waisea Makulau, the interim president of the market association. He noted that some dealers have been operating in the market for several years.
“They typically sell drugs in locations not covered by surveillance cameras,” Mr. Makulau stated. He expressed frustration that little has been done by authorities to tackle the problem, even after multiple complaints over the years.
“We established a committee with relevant authorities, but we haven’t convened in a while. During our last meeting, we raised this issue with them,” he added. Mr. Makulau emphasized that the installation of surveillance cameras has not effectively deterred dealers from their illegal activities.
“I am uncertain about the underlying problem since the issue remains unresolved,” he commented.
In response, Samuela Ligairi, the town’s special administrator, revealed that he recently met with senior police officials regarding the matter. “They have received complaints, and during the meeting, we discussed enhancing their operations in the town to tackle the issue,” he explained.
Mr. Ligairi noted that they are collaborating with authorities to find a solution. “If anyone is caught selling drugs at the market, it will be reported. We have cameras in place that can serve as evidence.” He mentioned that dealers are currently reportedly conducting their business outside the market premises.
