As the primary provider for her family, which includes her husband and four children, Ms. Matai acknowledges the difficulties of her role. However, she has found a silver lining in her new career path, stating that being a market vendor has not only allowed her to meet a broader range of people but has also opened many doors for opportunity. On a successful day, she can earn up to $300, significantly surpassing her previous income from her earlier job.
Despite the successes, Ms. Matai faces challenges, especially with fluctuating seafood prices influenced by high customer demand and the efforts involved in sourcing products like sea grapes and crabs. Currently, the prices for seafood at the market are quite accessible, with sea grapes costing between $2 and $5 depending on portion size, while crabs cooked in coconut milk are available for around $5.
In addition to Ms. Matai, another vendor, Tokasa Wati, has also found great success at the market. With over a decade of experience, Ms. Wati, who ventured into farming after leaving school, has grown her business from selling watermelons to cultivating dalo, corn, and pumpkins. During peak season, she earns up to $3000 weekly, a substantial income that enables her to support her four children’s education and fulfill family obligations. Ms. Wati encourages the youth of her community to utilize land ownership for financial growth, asserting that land provides a means to create wealth, regardless of academic performance.
