Mark Evans Reflects on a Transformative Three-Year Tenure with the Fijian Drua as He Bids Farewell

Swire Shipping Fijian Drua’s CEO Mark Evans reflects on a transformative three-year tenure with the club, emphasizing unforgettable moments forged in front of passionate home crowds during games against top teams in the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific. As he approaches his final week with the organization, Evans recalls the challenges and growth the Drua has experienced since he joined in September 2020, a period when the club had only hosted two home matches and was yet to complete a full season in Fiji.

Highlighting the memorable victories, Evans cites the historic win against the Crusaders during his first home game as a standout moment, stating, “You tend to enjoy the ones you win; there’s no such thing as a bad win.” He also noted the significance of last year’s thrilling victory over the Chiefs, representing the passion and confidence that has resonated with Drua fans. Additionally, he pointed to the groundbreaking women’s semifinal played at night, which drew a full house despite the outcome, showcasing the growing support for rugby in the region.

Beyond the pitch, Evans takes pride in his contributions to the future of Fijian rugby, particularly through the establishment of youth academies targeting age groups younger than what has traditionally been prioritized in the sport, as well as the creation of the Drua Foundation, aimed at ensuring long-term success for the club and its community.

Evans, who has cherished his time living in Fiji with his wife, expressed a commitment to exploring the country’s diverse landscapes from Savusavu to Taveuni, and the highlands of Ovalau. As he prepares to leave, he reflects positively on the memorable journey and the lasting impact he hopes to have made on the Drua and the broader rugby community in Fiji.
