Mark Evans has concluded an impactful chapter with the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, leaving behind a promising legacy of progress on and off the field. Since joining the franchise in September 2022, Evans has experienced an exhilarating three years at the helm of Fiji’s Super Rugby team.
Reflecting on his tenure, Evans noted the rapid pace at which time has flown. “It’s gone really quickly. When I came in, we’d only played two home games, and we’d never had a season on island. But it feels like a long journey packed into a short time,” he shared.
Among the highlights during his time with the Drua, Evans recalled the unforgettable moment of the team’s first win against the Crusaders during his inaugural home game, as well as the thrilling semi-final which was a full-house event, exemplifying the fervor that Fijian rugby invokes among its supporters.
Off the field, Evans expressed his pride in the establishment of youth academies aimed at nurturing future talent, showcasing his commitment to fostering growth in the sport within the community. “I’ve loved getting to know the country. It’s rare to have the chance to live somewhere like this and experience it fully,” he remarked, highlighting his connection to Fiji.
As Evans reflects on his departure, he feels assured that the Drua are in a stable position concerning their financial standings, facilities, and sporting performance. “You never really finish the job. You just hope to leave it in a better place than you found it, ready for the next person to take over,” he stated.
Though his future plans remain uncertain, it is undeniable that Evans’ impact on the Fijian Drua will resonate with players, staff, and fans for years to come. His farewell took place in Nadi, where he was honored by the management, staff, and players on Thursday evening.
Moving forward, the Drua is set to face Moana Pasifika in their opening match of the upcoming season on February 14 at Churchill Park in Lautoka, starting at 3:35 PM. This upcoming match marks a new beginning for the team as they carry on the legacy Evans has helped shape. With the solid groundwork laid during his tenure, fans can look forward to an exciting season ahead.
