Marist Brothers High School and Suva Grammar School opened the Coca-Cola Games Suva Zone Two competition in emphatic fashion on day one, leaving both schools firmly in the driving seat as the two-day meet heads into its final day at HFC Bank Stadium. Marist topped the boys’ medal table with a dominant haul of 17 gold, 13 silver and nine bronze, while Suva Grammar led the girls’ standings on 14 gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze.
Marist’s strong start gives the college a clear advantage in the boys’ division, where they sit well ahead of nearest challengers Suva Grammar. Grammar, traditionally competitive across both sexes, sits second in the boys’ tally with eight gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals, while Lomary Secondary School occupies third place on the boys’ leaderboard with two gold and one bronze.
In the girls’ division Suva Grammar’s early advantage looks equally imposing. St. Joseph’s Secondary School are now the closest pursuers after day one, recording nine gold, 10 silver and six bronze medals. Lomary rounds out the top three on the girls’ table with two gold, five silver and two bronze, putting the school in contention for event-specific honours despite a more modest medal count.
The senior blue-ribbon events produced headline winners: Paula Vonolagi of Suva Grammar captured the senior boys’ blue ribbon and Lusiana Lewasewa took the senior girls’ blue ribbon, each crossing the line as the marquee victors of the opening day. Officials released the day-one placings and medal counts following a busy programme of heats and finals at the HFC Bank Stadium.
Today’s concluding programme will decide which schools convert their opening-day momentum into zone titles, with final rounds and team-deciding events still to come. Coaches and team officials will be focused on securing relay and final-event points that often prove decisive in the overall standings at Coca-Cola Games meets.
Organisers confirmed the Zone Two competition wraps up today at HFC Bank Stadium, where athletes, school delegations and spectators will return for the championship-deciding events and medal presentations. The day-one results offer an early snapshot of form and depth, but with the final day still to be contested, the overall podiums in both boys’ and girls’ divisions remain open.
