The Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament is poised to once again bolster the pathway to international rugby, as organizers have reached out to the Fiji Rugby Union to name the extended squad for the upcoming Hong Kong 7s during this year’s event. Marist Rugby Club president Lawrence Tikaram highlighted ongoing discussions with Fiji Rugby to maintain a longstanding tradition of linking the tournament with national team selection.
Tikaram emphasized the significance of this connection, stating, “We’ve also asked Fiji Rugby to name the extended squad to the Hong Kong Sevens, which has always been a trait of the history of the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s.” He underscored the importance of fostering a pathway from grassroots rugby to the global arena, as it offers players a chance to showcase their talents and catch the attention of national selectors.
The Marist 7s, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has historically served as an essential scouting ground for those hoping to don the national jersey, with many players advancing to higher honors after impressive displays in the tournament. Tikaram believes that continuing this tradition will not only strengthen the tournament’s role in nurturing local talent but also inspire the participating teams.
This Golden Jubilee edition of the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s will feature over 120 teams competing over three days, solidifying its reputation as one of the largest grassroots rugby events in Fiji. The tournament is set to take place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva from the 26th to the 28th of next month, promising an exciting display of rugby and sportsmanship. The anticipation surrounding the event reflects a shared hope for fostering new talent that can shine on the world stage.
