Marijuana Seizures Surge: Who’s Behind the Trend?

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu, marijuana remains the most frequently seized illicit drug. He noted that incidents of unlawful possession of drugs and arrests related to marijuana continue to be reported daily, primarily involving individuals in their 20s and 30s.

Mr. Driu emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust in police efforts against drug-related crimes, stating that officers must be part of the solution rather than contributing to the problem. He highlighted that in addition to conducting snap searches and house raids, sharing information has aided in uncovering marijuana farms.

From October 18 to the present, 18 reports across all five divisions have been registered, including the uprooting of plants believed to be marijuana from a farm.

“To maintain public trust, we need to uphold the integrity of policing by enforcing a zero-tolerance policy on police officers,” Mr. Driu said, noting that this accountability is ensured through internal and criminal investigations. He also mentioned that there had been several methamphetamine seizures recorded during this time.
