The Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Penioni Ravunawa, recently participated in the Kunjal Nair Wellness Walk 2025 Awards Night, a celebration dedicated to promoting healthier lifestyles across Fiji. This event recognized the dedication of individuals and organizations involved in the annual wellness walk, which encourages communities to take the first step towards improved health.

During the awards ceremony, Ravunawa commended participants and organizers for their unwavering commitment to health and wellness. He stated, “Every step we take – to eat better, move more, and support our families – brings us closer to a healthier Fiji.” The Assistant Minister highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to confront Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and the importance of preventive care within society. He expressed that initiatives such as the Kunjal Nair Walk are vital for fostering long-term health changes driven by the community.

The walk, named in honor of the late health advocate Kunjal Nair, aligns with broader health initiatives in Fiji focusing on increasing physical activity and improving health screenings. For instance, a recent 21-day wellness walking initiative aims to provide free health services and promote fitness across Viti Levu, targeting various communities who may lack easy access to healthcare.

These community-based programs resonate with the Ministry of Health’s commitment to combat the high rates of NCDs, which account for approximately 80% of annual deaths in Fiji. Many of these conditions are preventable through lifestyle changes, reinforcing the importance of initiatives that motivate individuals to engage in healthier habits.

The collaborative spirit displayed at the awards night and similar health campaigns indicates a collective commitment to improving public health in Fiji. By encouraging active participation in health-related activities, community efforts like the Kunjal Nair Wellness Walk are a hopeful testament to the power of coming together for a common cause – a healthier future for all Fijians.
