Nearly 300 individuals gathered in Suva to honor International Human Rights Day in a significant march organized by the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement. The event commenced at the Flea Market and concluded at the Bowling Club, featuring inspiring speeches from key figures, such as Minister for Women and Children Lynda Tabuya and Shamima Ali, coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC).

In a recent interview, Ms. Ali expressed her appreciation for the substantial turnout, especially considering the late notice provided to organizers. She noted that preparing for such events typically requires extensive planning, including securing permits well ahead of time. Unfortunately, this year’s march was affected by delays in permit approval, raising concerns about participation levels.

Despite these hurdles, the community response was overwhelmingly favorable. Ms. Ali remarked on the challenges encountered in coordinating with law enforcement to obtain a permit that limited participation to 250 individuals. She highlighted Ms. Tabuya’s support, which played a crucial role in ensuring the march could proceed.

Genuine freedom of assembly is a fundamental right, and Ms. Ali emphasized that everyone deserves the opportunity to express themselves freely, irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, or abilities. She pointed out the ongoing struggle many women, girls, and marginalized groups face in achieving this promise of human rights, reinforcing the need for continuous advocacy and action.

This event serves as a hopeful reminder of community unity and resilience in the fight for human rights—a sentiment echoed by the passionate participants marching through Suva, advocating for a future where everyone can enjoy equal human rights.

In summary, this march not only demonstrated the commitment to human rights but also highlighted the importance of collective action and solidarity in the face of challenges. It is a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of those striving for equality and justice, inspiring further efforts in the ongoing journey towards human rights for all.
