Beyond the headline

A strong southeasterly wind flow remains across Fiji, with a Strong Wind Warning in force for several island groups and parts of the northern coast. Moderate to fresh southeasterly winds are expected through to midnight tomorrow, while strong southeast gusts up to 45 km/h are forecast for the land areas of Yasawa, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, and the coastal areas of Rakiraki and Udu Point. Seas will be rough in these conditions.

Cloudy periods with some showers are likely about Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri‑Ra, southern Bua, Cakaudrove, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Elsewhere conditions are expected to be generally fine apart from isolated afternoon or evening showers. Afternoon thunderstorms remain possible over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

The outlook for Tuesday is much the same: cloudy periods with some showers about the same eastern and southern areas and the island groups named above, with fine weather apart from afternoon or evening showers elsewhere. Moderate to fresh southeasterly winds are expected to continue with rough seas, and afternoon thunderstorms again possible over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

Local centres can expect the following: Navua, Suva and Nausori will see cloudy periods with some showers and possible afternoon or evening thunderstorms, with a top near 31°C and a low around 24°C. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba should remain mostly fine apart from isolated afternoon or evening showers and possible thunderstorms (today’s max about 32°C; overnight low 24°C). Tavua and Rakiraki will see strong southeasterly winds developing over Rakiraki from tomorrow, but otherwise fine weather apart from isolated showers; expect highs around 32°C.

Island groups and northern towns carry varying risks: Yasawa and Mamanuca are mainly fine (max about 32°C), while Taveuni, Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu will experience stronger southeasterly winds and cloudy periods with some showers (maxes near 31°C). Rotuma is affected by a trough with occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms today under moderate easterly winds and moderate seas; showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue into Tuesday. Mariners and coastal residents in the warned areas should take care with rough seas and strong winds and secure loose items where necessary.
