Beyond the headline

A moist easterly wind flow is affecting the group, bringing widespread showers with isolated heavy falls and the risk of afternoon or evening thunderstorms in many districts. The heaviest activity is expected across Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, with localized downpours that could produce flash flooding in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas. Conditions will remain unsettled through tomorrow, with winds and seas tending stronger into the outlook period.

Across the interior and south‑eastern divisions — including Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri and parts of Ra and Rakiraki — occasional showers and isolated heavy falls are likely, and afternoon or evening thunderstorms with heavy rain are expected. Northern and eastern coastal areas of Vanua Levu (southern Bua, Cakaudrove, eastern Macuata) and nearby islands will also see frequent showers and periods of heavy rain. Taveuni, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu are forecast to have cloudy periods with some showers, with thunderstorms possible at times.

Coastal and marine conditions will deteriorate from tomorrow. Winds are moderate easterlies today and are expected to become moderate to fresh, later tending southeasterly in the Friday outlook. Seas are moderate presently but will build to moderate to rough from tomorrow, so small craft operators and those planning coastal activities should take care.

Local forecasts for major centres reflect the general pattern. Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect occasional showers with isolated heavy falls and likely afternoon or evening thunderstorms; tomorrow’s range is about 24–31°C with a slightly warmer outlook on Friday. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba are generally fine apart from afternoon or evening showers but should watch for thunderstorms; temperatures around 22–34°C tomorrow. Labasa, Savusavu and Nabouwalu will see occasional showers with isolated heavy falls and evening thunderstorms possible, with daytime maxima near the low‑ to mid‑30s. Taveuni, Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu will have cloudy periods with some showers and the chance of afternoon thunderstorms.

Rotuma remains under the influence of a trough of low pressure with occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms, moderate to fresh easterly winds and moderate to rough seas; temperatures are around 25–31°C with little change into the Friday outlook. Residents in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas across affected islands should be alert to the potential for brief but intense downpours and localized flash flooding, and take usual precautions where necessary.
