Beyond the headline

A moist easterly wind flow is in place across the group, bringing occasional showers and isolated heavy falls to many areas and afternoon or evening thunderstorms over the main islands. Conditions will remain unsettled through tomorrow with winds and seas picking up towards Friday.

The heaviest and most frequent showers are expected over Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri‑Ra‑Rakiraki, southern Bua, Cakaudrove and eastern Macuata. Taveuni, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands can expect cloudy periods with some showers. Afternoon or evening thunderstorms with heavy falls are likely across Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, and localised heavy rain may produce flash flooding in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas.

Local forecasts for population centres reflect the unsettled pattern. Navua, Suva and Nausori will see occasional showers with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm activity in the afternoons and evenings; daytime highs around 31°C and lows near 24°C are expected. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba should generally be fine apart from afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms, with daytime highs near 33–34°C and cooler nights into the low 20s. Sigatoka and the Coral Coast will be mainly fine apart from late showers and storms, while Labasa and other northern centres may have occasional showers with showers easing later today; Labasa’s daytime maximum around 34°C. Taveuni, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu, the Yasawa/Mamanuca group and Savusavu will see cloud and some showers, with thunderstorms possible at times. Rotuma remains under a trough of low pressure with occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Winds are moderate easterlies today and are forecast to become moderate to fresh from tomorrow, tending more southeasterly in the outlook. Seas are moderate at present but are expected to build to moderate to rough from tomorrow. Mariners and those planning coastal activities should exercise caution as conditions deteriorate.

Looking ahead to Friday, the pattern continues: cloudy periods with some showers across the areas already affected and afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls expected again over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. The risk of localized flash flooding in vulnerable low‑lying locations persists while winds and seas remain elevated.
