FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A weakening trough over the eastern islands, combined with a moist northeasterly wind flow over the group, will keep many parts of Fiji under cloudy skies with scattered showers into tomorrow. The outer islands and eastern districts are most likely to see persistent cloud and rain, while most other areas can expect generally fine conditions interrupted by afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Cloudy periods with some showers are expected over Yasawa, Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri‑Ra, southern Bua, Cakaudrove, eastern Macuata, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, as well as the Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu groups. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms producing heavy falls are forecast for Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Localised heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding of low‑lying and flood‑prone areas, so residents in vulnerable locations should take appropriate precautions.

Winds are moderate from the northeasterly quarter today and are expected to change to easterly from tomorrow. Seas will be moderate around the main islands. Rotuma remains under a moist easterly flow with cloudy periods, showers and isolated thunderstorms, accompanied by moderate to fresh easterly winds and seas that may be moderate to rough.

Temperatures will be broadly similar across the group. For Navua/Suva/Nausori and nearby districts the forecast is cloudy periods with showers and isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms, with a minimum around 24°C and a maximum near 32°C (outlook Saturday: 25/32°C). Nadi/Lautoka/Ba and Tavua/Rakiraki are expected to be mostly fine apart from late showers and isolated thunderstorms, with lows near 24–25°C and highs around 31–32°C. Yasawa/Mamanuca, Taveuni, Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu can expect cloudy periods and some showers with daytime maxima nearer 31°C. Labasa, Savusavu and other northern centres will also see the chance of afternoon thunderstorms and similar temperature ranges.

The outlook for Saturday remains much the same: cloudy periods with some showers over the eastern and island groups listed above, fine weather apart from afternoon or evening showers elsewhere, and continued risk of isolated afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Moderate easterly winds and moderate seas are expected to continue.
