FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A trough of low pressure to the west of Fiji, combined with a moist north to northeast wind flow, will keep much of the group unsettled through tonight and into Thursday. Occasional showers are expected across many areas, with afternoon and evening thunderstorms developing over the larger islands and isolated heavy falls possible in several districts.

Tonight, the heaviest and most persistent showers are likely over Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri–Ra–Rakiraki, eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and surrounding islets. Showers in those areas may include isolated heavy falls and are expected to ease to fewer showers from tomorrow. Elsewhere, some showers and afternoon or evening thunderstorms are forecast, with Viti Levu and Vanua Levu particularly prone to thunderstorms producing heavy rain. Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying areas.

Thursday’s outlook is for cloudy periods with some showers across Serua–Namosi, Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri–Ra, eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove, southern Bua, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, and the Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu groups. Most other districts should be fine apart from the chance of afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms. The risk of afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls remains for Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, so low-lying communities should be prepared for brief, intense downpours. Winds will ease to moderate easterlies on Thursday, and seas are expected to remain moderate.

Local centres: Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect occasional showers easing to fewer showers by tomorrow, with afternoon thunderstorms likely — temperatures around 25–32°C. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba, and the Sigatoka/Coral Coast should see some showers and afternoon or evening thunderstorms, with conditions generally fine apart from those late showers; temperatures also near 25–32°C. Rakiraki and surrounding areas will have occasional showers that ease to some showers from tomorrow, with isolated thunderstorms in the afternoons. The Yasawa and Mamanuca groups may see occasional showers with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorms.

Rotuma is affected by the trough and a moist easterly flow, bringing occasional showers with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls. Winds are moderate to fresh from the east and seas moderate to rough. Temperatures there are forecast around 25–32°C, with a similar but slightly drier outlook on Thursday (cloudy periods with some showers).
