FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A moist northeasterly wind flow prevails over Fiji this morning, while a trough of low pressure approaching from the southwest is expected to increase cloud and showers from later today. Afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls are likely over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, and some areas can expect isolated heavy downpours that may produce brief but intense rainfall.

To midnight tonight, occasional showers with isolated heavy falls are expected over Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri–Ra–Rakiraki, eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau, Lomaiviti and Yasawa groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Elsewhere conditions will be generally fine apart from afternoon or evening showers, though showers will become more frequent later today with isolated thunderstorms. Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying areas. Winds are expected to be moderate from the northeast and seas moderate.

The outlook for Wednesday is for cloudy periods with some showers across Serua–Namosi, Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri–Ra, eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove, southern Bua, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau, Lomaiviti and Yasawa groups, and Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Cloudy periods with some showers and afternoon or evening heavy falls are likely elsewhere, with afternoon thunderstorms and heavy falls again most likely over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. The risk of localised flash flooding of low-lying areas remains while northeasterly winds stay moderate and seas moderate.

Local centre notes: Navua/Suva/Nausori will see cloudy periods with some showers and isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms and heavy falls (minimum 25°C, maximum around 31°C today; outlook for Wednesday 25/32°C). Nadi/Lautoka/Ba and Sigatoka/Coral Coast are mostly fine apart from afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls, with daytime temperatures near 32°C. Many coastal and island areas — including Tavua/Rakiraki, Yasawa/Mamanuca, Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu, Taveuni, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu — can expect occasional showers with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorms and similar mild minimums and daytime highs around 31–32°C.

Rotuma is under a moist easterly flow with cloudy periods and some showers, and isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls possible. Winds there will be moderate to fresh easterly with seas moderate to rough. Temperatures on Rotuma are near a minimum of 25°C and a maximum around 33°C, easing slightly on Wednesday. Mariners and people in low-lying areas should take note of the locally heavy showers and the potential for short-lived flooding.
