Marcelo Montoya, a former player for the Fiji Bati, is set to leave the New Zealand Warriors to make a return to Australia. The 28-year-old has received an early release from his contract, which was initially scheduled to run until the end of next season.
Warriors’ general manager of recruitment, pathways, and development, Andrew McFadden, stated, “We were happy for Marcelo to see out his contract with us but we’re really pleased he has found a club back in Australia giving him longer-term security.” He added that Montoya has been a valuable asset to the team over the past four seasons, contributing significantly both on and off the field. McFadden also extended well wishes to Montoya and his wife Tayla for their future endeavors.
Montoya is anticipated to rejoin his former team, the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs, signing a two-year deal. During his time with the Warriors, he scored 30 tries in 82 matches and participated in all 27 games for the team in 2023.
