The search for a new head coach for the Manu Samoa rugby team is approaching its conclusion, according to Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, chairman of Lakapi Samoa. The interview process has wrapped up, attracting strong applications from a diverse pool of candidates, including those from Britain, New Zealand, and Australia.

Tuilaepa emphasized the high caliber of applicants, stating, “There are some really good candidates, and it’s going to be a tough decision for the panel.” The final decision hinges on a report from the selection panel, which will be pivotal in determining the ideal candidate for the head coach position.

This vacancy was created when Mase Mahonri Schwalger resigned in January 2025 amid serious legal issues, including charges of multiple sexual offenses. Despite these challenges, Mase had successfully led the team to a remarkable victory over Italy and impressive performances in the 2024 Pacific Nations Cup. Lakapi Samoa has acknowledged his significant contributions to the development of the team during his tenure.

With the head coach position still unfilled, 2025 is set to be a critical year for Manu Samoa. The upcoming Pacific Nations Cup is particularly important, as it acts as a qualifier for the expanded Rugby World Cup scheduled for 2027.

This coaching search underscores Pacific rugby’s ongoing dedication to finding strong leadership capable of guiding teams through difficult times. The decision on the new coach promises to have a positive impact on the future of Manu Samoa rugby, generating optimism for upcoming tournaments and reaffirming the commitment to excellence in Pacific rugby.
