Authorities are currently on the lookout for a suspect who allegedly murdered a man within the confines of the Savusavu Police Station cell on November 5. According to reports, the suspect and the victim were incarcerated together, during which the suspect is accused of using a piece of timber to fatally attack his cellmate.

Following a court appearance, the suspect was sent to St Giles Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. However, he managed to escape from the facility, prompting a manhunt led by local police. Police spokesman Wame Bautolu confirmed the ongoing search to locate the suspect.

In response to this serious incident, Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew has instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Suva to carry out a thorough investigation. Mr. Fong Chew also emphasized the need to understand the series of events that culminated in the tragic incident.

This situation highlights the challenges law enforcement faces in ensuring the security of individuals in their custody, especially those requiring mental health interventions. The hope is that with swift action and thorough investigation, the authorities will not only locate the escaped suspect but also enhance the safety protocols within the judicial and healthcare systems to prevent similar incidents in the future.
