Manchester United has initiated discussions with former players Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regarding the position of caretaker manager for the remainder of the season. According to reports from BBC Sport, these talks are in the early, exploratory phase, with Carrick emerging as a serious contender for the role.

The club is in search of a temporary replacement for Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed after a challenging 14-month tenure. Fletcher, a former midfielder who has taken on the role of interim manager, will continue to lead the squad until a new caretaker is appointed. In addition to Fletcher, the club’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, has engaged in discussions with Solskjaer and Carrick. Another former United striker, Ruud van Nistelrooy, is also considered a potential candidate, having previously managed the team to three wins and a draw during a short caretaker stint in 2024.

Solskjaer’s history with the club is notable, as he also stepped in as interim manager in 2018 before being given the role on a full-time basis. Looking ahead, Manchester United is expected to seek a permanent manager over the summer, with potential candidates including Oliver Glasner from Crystal Palace and Roberto De Zerbi, currently coaching Marseille.

This transitional period offers Manchester United an opportunity to stabilize and refocus ahead of a more permanent solution. With experienced former players in the running, the club aims to harness their deep understanding of United’s values and style, potentially paving the way for a brighter future.
