Growing up in Port Vila, Shefa Province, Vanuatu, Nigel Batie was instilled with the values of community, resilience, and service by his close-knit family. From a young age, he developed a deep fascination with technology and its ability to solve real challenges faced by Pacific communities. This passion, encouraged by his cultural background and family support, drove him to explore digital solutions that could generate a positive social impact, urging him to pursue opportunities to aid his country.
Batie’s upbringing reinforced the significance of collective progress and using personal skills for the common good. This foundation shaped his aspirations and approach to problem-solving, prompting him to seek practical applications of technology for regional development. His initial enthusiasm eventually matured into a commitment to formal education that would equip him to make a significant difference.
His dedication and hard work led him to earn the prestigious Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship, an achievement he described as transformative for his personal and academic journey. As a Bachelor of Computer Science and Information Systems student at The University of the South Pacific (USP), Batie found the scholarship instrumental in accessing a diverse and academically rich environment. He noted, “USP’s regional focus and its commitment to addressing Pacific challenges through technology and innovation were major motivators for me.”
Through the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship, Batie gained essential skills necessary for contributing to data-driven development in both Vanuatu and the broader Pacific region.
