A man convicted for possessing 18.310 grams of methamphetamine has been handed a 53-month sentence, of which he must serve at least 40 months before becoming eligible for parole. Avinesh Menon was sentenced by Magistrate Talei Kean for unlawful possession of illicit drugs.
During a police search on May 15, authorities discovered the drugs hidden between Menon’s thighs. The court noted that this is not Menon’s first conviction for similar offenses. During the proceedings, he expressed remorse and requested the court to show leniency.
Magistrate Kean highlighted the increasing problem of illicit drug offenses in Fiji, mentioning that a larger quantity of drugs, including methamphetamine, has been seized in recent years. She emphasized the importance of deterrence in sentencing, drawing from real-life examples that suggest it is effective for many offenders.
The magistrate acknowledged that Menon has taken responsibility for his actions, cooperated with law enforcement, and demonstrated a genuine interest in reform by pleading guilty.
This case reflects the broader issue of drug abuse that many communities face, but it also shows a path toward reform and rehabilitation for individuals who are willing to take responsibility for their actions. By engaging with the legal system and acknowledging his past mistakes, Menon may have the opportunity to turn his life around upon release.
